In my many years of teaching ballet, I have come to realize one thing. People think of ballet as an elegant and beautiful art, but the process of learning it is not always graceful.

We fall, lose our balance, and forget the steps. Even movements we have practiced dozens of times do not always go as we wish. I believe the true value of ballet lies in that very process. Ballet teaches us not simply how to avoid falling, but how to find our balance again when we do.

I see this often when teaching young children. A child learning a pirouette for the first time may struggle to complete even one turn. A pirouette is a ballet movement in which a dancer turns in place, balancing on one supporting leg. It may look effortless, but it requires precise alignment and a strong sense of balance.

At first, children may lose their balance and tumble to the floor. Yet they get back up and say, “Let me try one more time.” Whenever I hear those words, I am reminded of something: the willingness to try again without giving up after a fall is one of the most precious lessons we can pass on to children through dance.

The same is true of adults. They ask, “Can I start ballet at my age?” or “Can I do it even if I’m not flexible?” I always tell them they can. Ballet is not an art reserved only for those who are already good at it.

Teaching senior ballet, in particular, has led me to reconsider what dance means. When I was young, what mattered was how high I could jump and how many turns I could do. But as we grow older, the simple ability to move to music on our own two feet, with body and heart dancing together, becomes more precious.

Mistakes happen onstage, too. A dancer may miss a musical cue or forget a movement. But the performance continues. The dancer must regain balance and move into the next step.

Isn’t life much the same? There are times when things do not go according to plan and we lose our sense of direction. What matters is not that we never waver, but that we find our center again afterward.

In ballet, we call this balance. To me, balance means more than the ability to stand on one leg for a long time. It is the strength to steady ourselves when we wobble and to continue into the next movement after a fall.

Throughout my years of learning and teaching ballet, I have witnessed countless moments of falling and getting back up. Children, adults, and seniors alike may falter, but they begin again, each finding their own center.

The beauty of ballet does not lie in perfection alone. It lies in finding balance amid uncertainty, rising after a fall, and continuing forward. That is one of the most beautiful lessons ballet teaches us about how to live.
