미국을 대표하는 알빈 에일리 현대무용단은 단순한 공연 단체를 넘어 하나의 역사이자 정신이다. 1958년, 안무가 알빈 에일리(Alvin Ailey)는 자신의 이름을 건 무용단을 창단하며, 아프리카계 미국인의 역사와 삶, 특히 흑인 노예의 고통과 해방의 기억을 춤으로 끌어올렸다. 그의 춤은 단순한 움직임이 아니라, 인간이 견뎌온 시간과 기억을 몸에 새기는 일이었다. 지금도 그 정신은 무대 위에 흐르고 있다.

마지막 작품 ‘계시(Revelations)’는 이 무용단의 대표작이다. 가스펠 음악 “아브라함의 품 안에서 내 영혼이 흔들린다(Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham)”가 흐르는 가운데, 성서에서 말하는 ‘아브라함의 품’처럼 모든 고통이 잠잠해지는 안식의 감각이 스며든다. 그 장면에서 흰 우산은 아픔을 지나 다시 일어서는 희망을, 의자는 긴 시간 버텨온 삶의 무게를 상징하며 무대의 의미를 더욱 깊게 만든다. 어둠을 지나 빛으로 나아가는 장면 속에서, 다시 일어서는 인간의 의지가 조용히 전해진다.

공연을 보며 내내 나는 이렇게 느꼈다. 나 역시 무용을 하기 때문에 안다. 저 한 동작은 수없이 반복하고 연습하지 않으면 결코 나올 수 없다는 것을. 그래서 그들의 움직임은 단순한 동작이 아니라, 시간과 노력의 결과로 더 깊이 와 닿았다.

그래서 학생들에게 나는 묻는다. 이 춤은 무엇을 말하고 있는가? 우리는 이 질문을 통해 무엇을 보게 되는가?

각자는 다른 방식으로 이 공연을 만난다. 어떤 이는 지루해 하고, 어떤 이는 졸고, 또 어떤 이는 눈물을 흘리고 어떤 이는 미소를 짓는다. 현대무용은 정답을 주지 않는다. 대신 우리에게 묻는다. 나는 지금 무엇을 느끼고 있는가?

나는 해마다 이 공연을 보지만, 느낌은 늘 다르다. 같은 무대이지만, 그때의 나는 늘 다르기 때문이다. 공연이 끝났을 때, 나는 더 이상 단순한 관객이 아니었다. 특별한 순간을 기억하고 싶어서 기념품도 샀다. 그 순간 내 안에 남은 울림을 조용히 느꼈다.

예술은 우리를 설명하지 않는다. 다만, 우리가 누구인지 비춰줄 뿐이다.

What Is Dance Saying? — A Review of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

On a bright weekend at the end of March, I heard the news of a performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and visited the theater with our Jin Ballet School “Balsamo” group—a gathering of those who love ballet.

Arriving early as if setting out on a picnic, we shared a simple dinner prepared by our group leader in front of the fountain. Before the performance began, we took time for a preview session, adjusting our perspective and preparing ourselves to understand modern dance. In that moment, we had already stepped quietly into their world.

The Alvin Ailey company, a symbol of American dance, is more than a performing group—it is a history and a spirit. In 1958, choreographer Alvin Ailey founded the company bearing his name, bringing to the stage the history and lived experiences of African Americans, especially the pain and resilience rooted in slavery. His choreography is not merely movement; it is the act of inscribing human endurance and memory into the body. That spirit continues to flow across the stage today.

The atmosphere in the theater was distinctly different from that of opera or ballet. The audience was largely Black, and their responses were far more immediate and expressive. Even the smallest gesture by a dancer drew spontaneous reactions. Intermission was not a quiet pause, but a lively continuation filled with conversation and laughter. The space itself breathed with a different kind of freedom and vitality.

The program brought together different works—Difference Between, Embrace, and The Holy Blues—yet they all converged on a single question:
How does a human being endure suffering, and how does one rise again?

The final piece, Revelations, is the company’s signature work. As the gospel song Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham filled the theater, a sense of rest and release emerged, echoing the biblical image of “Abraham’s bosom”—a place where all pain finds peace. In this scene, white umbrellas symbolized hope after hardship, while chairs represented the weight of a life long endured. Moving from darkness into light, the dancers quietly conveyed the resilience of the human spirit.

Throughout the performance, I found myself reflecting deeply. As a dancer, I know well that such movements cannot be achieved without endless repetition and discipline. Each gesture on stage is not simply a movement—it is the embodiment of time, effort, and devotion. That is why their dance resonates so profoundly.

And so I ask my students:
What is this dance saying?
And through that question, what do we begin to see?

Each person encounters the performance differently. Some may feel bored, some may fall asleep, others may be moved to tears, while some smile quietly. Modern dance offers no fixed answers. Instead, it asks us: What am I feeling at this very moment?

I watch this performance every year, yet each time feels different—because I, too, am different each time I return. When the performance ended, I was no longer simply an audience member. Wanting to hold on to that special moment, I bought a small souvenir and quietly embraced the lingering resonance within me.

Art does not explain us.
It simply reflects who we are.
