춤으로 하나 되는 우리 공동체 LAPD National Night Out 초청공연

지난 8월 4일 오후 6시, 한미무용연합과 진발레스쿨 단원 25명은 로스앤젤레스 경찰국(LAPD) 올림픽경찰서의 초청으로 열린 ‘2026 내셔널 나이트 아웃(National Night Out)’ 행사에서 무용 공연을 펼쳤다.

내셔널 나이트 아웃은 경찰과 지역 주민이 한자리에 모여 서로 소통하고 신뢰를 쌓으며, 범죄를 예방하고 안전한 지역사회를 함께 만들어 가기 위해 미국 전역에서 매년 열리는 행사다. 이날 행사에는 다양한 민족과 세대의 주민들이 함께했으며, 공연과 어린이들을 위한 게임, 선물 증정 등 온 가족이 함께 즐길 수 있는 다양한 프로그램이 마련되었다. 경찰관과 주민들이 자연스럽게 이야기를 나누며 서로를 이해하고 신뢰를 쌓아가는 뜻깊은 시간이었다.

이날 경찰서는 우리를 위해 작은 무대를 정성껏 마련해 주었다. 그러나 어린 학생부터 시니어까지 25명의 단원이 함께 오르기에는 공간이 부족했다. 우리는 모든 단원이 안전하게 움직이며 최고의 공연을 펼칠 수 있도록 무대 앞 넓은 아스팔트 위에서 춤추기로 결정했다.

무용수에게 딱딱한 아스팔트 바닥은 결코 쉬운 무대가 아니었다. 발끝으로 전해지는 충격은 컸지만, 그 단단한 바닥보다 우리의 마음은 훨씬 가벼웠다. 경찰관들과 지역 주민들이 보내준 따뜻한 박수와 환한 미소가 있었기에 우리는 더욱 힘차게 춤출 수 있었다.

이런 무대는 처음이 아니었다. 한미무용연합은 지난 23년 동안 467회가 넘는 커뮤니티 봉사 공연을 이어오고 있다. 크고 화려한 공연장에서도 춤을 추었고, 공원과 거리, 학교와 양로원 등 춤이 필요한 곳이라면 어디든 찾아가 무대를 만들었다. 그 모든 공연에는 저마다의 소중한 이야기와 감동이 담겨 있다. 그리고 경찰관들과 지역 주민들을 위해 함께 춤추며 느꼈던 감사와 행복 역시 오래도록 가슴속에 남을 소중한 기억이 될 것이다.

춤은 넓고 화려한 무대에서만 빛나는 것이 아니다. 누군가에게 기쁨과 희망을 전하고, 서로 다른 사람들의 마음을 이어줄 수 있다면 그곳이 바로 가장 아름다운 무대가 된다.

춤은 사람과 사람을 이어주고, 세대와 문화를 넘어 마음과 마음을 연결하는 아름다운 언어이다. 이번 공연을 통해 한인타운과 지역사회의 안전을 위해 늘 헌신하는 경찰관들에게 우리의 춤으로 감사의 마음을 전하고, 다양한 민족의 이웃들과 함께 어울리며 커뮤니티 봉사를 실천할 수 있었던 것은 무엇보다 뜻깊은 시간이었다.

함께해 준 모든 단원과 학부모님, 그리고 소중한 자리를 마련해 주신 LAPD 올림픽경찰서 관계자 여러분께 진심으로 감사드린다.

오늘도 우리는 춤을 통해 사람을 만나고, 마음을 나누며, 더 따뜻한 공동체를 만들어 간다. 그것이 우리가 춤을 추는 이유이다.

Dance Brings Our Community Together: Invited Performance at LAPD National Night Out

On August 4 at 6:00 p.m., 25 members of the KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School performed at the 2026 National Night Out, hosted by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division.

National Night Out is an annual nationwide event that brings police officers and local residents together to communicate, build trust, prevent crime, and create safer communities. This year’s event welcomed residents of different ethnicities and generations and featured a variety of family-friendly activities, including live performances, children’s games, and giveaways. It was a meaningful evening in which police officers and community members could talk naturally, better understand one another, and strengthen their mutual trust.

The police department thoughtfully prepared a small stage for our performance. However, it was not large enough to accommodate all 25 dancers, ranging from young children to seniors. To allow everyone to move safely and give their best performance, we decided to dance on the spacious asphalt area in front of the stage.

Performing on hard asphalt is never easy for a dancer. The impact on our feet was strong, but our hearts felt much lighter than the solid ground beneath us. Encouraged by the warm applause and bright smiles of the police officers and local residents, we were able to dance with even greater energy and enthusiasm.

This was not the first time we had performed in an unconventional setting. For the past 23 years, the KOA Dance Federation has presented more than 467 community service performances. We have danced in large, magnificent theaters as well as in parks, on streets, at schools, and in senior centers—wherever dance was needed, we created a stage. Each performance has carried its own precious story and heartfelt memories. The gratitude and happiness we experienced while dancing for the police officers and local residents will also remain in our hearts for many years to come.

Dance does not shine only on a large and glamorous stage. If it can bring joy and hope to someone and connect the hearts of people from different backgrounds, then that place becomes the most beautiful stage of all.

Dance Brings Our Community Together.

Dance is a beautiful language that connects people, hearts, generations, and cultures. Through this performance, we were able to express our gratitude through dance to the police officers who continually dedicate themselves to the safety of Koreatown and the surrounding community. It was especially meaningful to share this experience with neighbors of many different ethnic backgrounds while continuing our mission of community service.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the dancers and parents who participated, as well as to the LAPD Olympic Division officers and staff who made this meaningful occasion possible.

Today, as always, we meet people through dance, share our hearts, and help create a warmer and more caring community. That is why we dance.
